Animal Wellness - Heavy Metal Toxicity, by Dr. Gloria Dodd, DVM
There's a really interesting article on the effects of heavy metals on pets in the October/November issue of Animal Wellness magazine: "Heavy Metal Toxicity", by Dr. Gloria Dodd, DVM.
Gloria's article appears to be a simplified version of the research papers she has available from her website on heavy metal toxicity:
http://www.holisticvetpetcare.net/heavy_metal_posion.htm
Her reports are rather technical, but her Animal Wellness article is easy to understand. Her research on heavy metal toxicity levels is very extensive.
What makes her findings really important to us (as if we really needed a reason) is that it extends beyond animals and what we feed them. Heavy metal poisoning is something that we should all be concerned about. We wondered about how our dog Doodle ended up with such high levels of heavy metals in her system. This article answered some of our questions. Although we can't be totally sure about her history from the 16 years prior to the time we adopted her. We suspect she ingested these substances from her food and water supply. Even small doses will accumulate in your tissues and build up over time...
One of Gloria's recommendations is to definitely not give your dog or cat tap water. At the very least, you should give your pet filtered water. More and more health-conscious people drink bottled water. Isn't it time we did the same for our pets?
