The Honest Kitchen's Dehydrated Dog Food Labeled "Human Food-Grade"

Lucy Postins, founder of The Honest Kitchen, commented on the FDA's statement of 'no-objection' regarding their use of the term "human grade" on their dehydrated raw dog foods:

"This is an extremely important accomplishment for our company, and we believe we are the first pet food manufacturer to be able to legally use such a statement on our products...

We went to a great deal of trouble to locate human-food vendors for every ingredient we purchase, and to find a human-food manufacturing facility to make our products, to ensure that the stringent controls in place for human food production really would be applied to our foods as well...

We have been liaising for several months with the USDA and FDA, regarding the appropriateness of the term "Human Grade" on our product labels and have worked very, very hard to demonstrate to these authorities that every ingredient we use is human-edible. The manufacturing takes place in a human-food processing plant and everything about the products is indeed of human-grade quality... Of course, we are not intending for these products to be sold for humans to eat, and that was a key point that had to be addressed in this matter."

Lucy had to be careful about making sure the label clearly stated that their dehydrated raw dog foods were not intended for human consumption.

The statement that The Honest Kitchen was allowed to put on their labels says:

"This product is made with 100% human food-grade ingredients. It contains no animal feed grade ingredients and is made in a USDA-inspected facility, but is intended for your dog to eat, not you."

If you've had a chance to see and smell these foods up close, you know that it looks like something you could actually eat yourself...
