Is There Such A Thing As "Good Meat Byproduct" For Your Pet?

You want to provide your dog or cat with the best food. And you may have gotten the impression that meat byproducts are less than desirable when it comes to good nutrition for your pet. There is a lot of conflicting information out there about what makes for good nutrition. So it's understandable if you aren't sure about what to do about it.

For example, giving raw turkey necks to your dog is a great treat. But aren't turkey necks considered meat byproducts? The answer is yes. What you have to realize is that not all meat byproducts are bad. What matters most is where they come from. Whether it's kidneys, heart, turkey necks, or other byproducts, you want them to come from healthy animals. As I mentioned before, some companies (most mass-produced commercial pet food makers) use meat byproducts that come from euthanized or diseased animals... And they certainly won't put this on their food labels or publicize this in anyway.

Fortunately, there are pet food companies like Evangers, Merrick, Eagle Pack and Wysong, for example, that have their own food processing plants. Their reputation is built on making the best quality pet food. And they can tell you exactly what goes into their products. Reputable premium pet food manufacturers do not engage in these shady practices. They make sure that only the best ingredients are used.

I really wish the FDA would ban the practice of using "unhealthy" meats and byproducts in pet foods. But unless people stopped buying the cheapest foods for their pets, it's just not going to happen.
