News - Hurricane Katrina Animal Survivors Need Homes - Over 600 Cats and Dogs Flying In

News - Hurricane Katrina Animal Survivors Need Homes (NBC4.tv) - link:

"...The task of taking care of many of the displaced pets from Hurricane Katrina is about to fall into the laps of not only rescue workers but Southern Californians willing to give the animals a place to live.
...Mercy Airlift International Collection Center in Orange County expects to send out supplies Saturday for both people and pets. But in the meantime, there are 600 dogs and cats expected to land in Southern California this weekend. And all of them will need places to live. It's a road trip Susan Keyes-Huegle never expected to take.
Keyes-Huegle is one of seven Humane Society of the United States volunteers taking supplies to Louisiana in the back of her truck with the goal of saving stranded animals... 'The dogs have been running in packs,' Keyes-Huegle said. 'But there's a lot of fear that most of these animals have been starving to death, so they are in pretty bad shape.'
Officials estimate that 5,500 animals are in New Orleans looking for food and shelter. Most of them are dogs and cats left behind by their owners. Rescue workers said the domestic animals are turning wild and angry with no one to care for them..."

This scenario is being replayed at other cities around the US. With the tsunami relief efforts still fresh in our memory, you know how important it is to keep this kind of news in front of the public. But even with the most dire situations, the news has a very short attention span. So it's up to us to keep ourselves informed of the latest updates.

If you still can afford to do so here is a link to donate to the Katrina Disaster Relief Fund. The ASPCA keeps a running diary of what's going on with their day to day efforts.

And if you're thinking about adopting a pet, this is definitely the right time to do so!
