KFMB Channel 8 San Diego, CA - Misleading News Contributes To Bad Pitbull Reputation

This is an email we sent to KFMB Channel 8 San Diego (news8@kfmb.com) regarding tonight's news:

My wife and I watched your news bit about the child getting mauled by two dogs. We are truly sorry that he had to suffer through such a horrific experience. However, we were really disappointed by your reporting.

First you introduced the story as "two pitbulls attacking a child"...
Then your actual news segment showed a picture of what looked like two rottweilers. Finally you said the child was attacked by two dogs but you weren't sure if they were pitbulls or bulldogs.

As owners of a pitbull, we are very sensitive to the bias that people have against pitbulls. Several cities have already imposed a mandatory ban on the breed. And your flashy/erroneous report tag line mentioning a pitbull attack just feeds into people's fears.

Pitbulls are actually a gentle breed. Responsible owners teach their dogs how to behave and it is a serious error to portray a certain breed as being vicious or evil. There are thousands of owners who know how kind, loyal, loving and affectionate pitbulls are. It is irresponsible owners who raise dangerous dogs, not the breed. Your misleading reporting only serves to ignite incorrect fear of pitbulls that may some day lead to the destruction and death of many beloved family pets.

We love all of our animals as a part of our family and we are outraged and fearful that these kind of fear tactics may lead to us having to lose one of our precious pets. I simply can't even imagine what we would do if we were faced with losing our baby dog. It is your responsibility as journalists to report the truth, not to cater to the sensationalism of the day. Shame on you for using "bait and switch" to delivery the sad story of one child's awful encounter and possibly dooming an entire breed to a horrific end. Do your job and report the truth and the facts.
